XIÉ

On left bank of the Xié River, deep in the Amazon Forest, just 30 km from the border between Brazil, Venezuela and Colombia, one small indigenous village becomes a temporary hospital.

During eight days of surgery, the village of Vila Nova receives over 500 patients needing operations. They are Indians from 15 different ethnical groups, who arrive on boats having travelled on the river for up to seven days.

Expedicionários da Saúde is a group of volunteer surgeons based more than 4,000 km away, in the city of Campinas, near São Paulo in the industrialized South of Brazil. The group has developed a unique program to carry out surgeries in remote parts of Brazil's Amazon Region.

Working under the constant hum of generators, the surgeries are carried out in a tent, on patients whose only other option would be to seek treatment in Manaus, the Amazon's main city, over 1,000 km away.

Xié is a revealing portrait of life in Alto Rio Negro, one of the least explored places in South America. As each patient is treated in the temporary hospital at Vila Nova, the personal life of a Brazilian Indian unfolds. And the encounters between doctors and patients mirror the country's extremes - the modern, metropolitan Brazil of the doctors, and the wild Amazon of the patients.
