YUNUSMuhammad Yunus created the micro-credit concept with his Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. His model met with so much success that it was emulated by more than 65 countries, and earned him Nobel Peace Prize in 2006. In Bangladesh, the bank employs 1,200 staff members and lends about US$1 billion per year. The bank charges market interest rates and default is almost zero. Clients are not required to prove their income or present collateral security and are not even required to hold a banking account. A revolutionary model. The financial crisis that resulted in the meltdown of world markets may have a thing to learn from Yunus. In his own words: “Maybe is a good time for conventional banks to stop and reflect.”
Yunus visited São Paulo in 2008 as part of the celebrations of the 10th anniversary of Banco do Povo Paulista. We interviewed the “Banker to the poor” - name of his book - and produced a 8-minute documentary on his vision.
